Abortionist: Counseling at abortion facilities “less than desirable”

Pro-lifers have often written about biased and dishonest “counseling” in abortion facilities. Women who have had abortions often talk about how little information they were given about the developing baby and abortion’s risks. In fact, in one survey, 90% of post-abortive women said they were not given enough information to make an informed decision.

Many times, they say they were not encouraged to ask questions and were not told the truth.  Pro-choicers usually rationalize or deny the stories. But now a prominent abortionist has come forward and admitted that counseling at abortion facilities leaves much to be desired.

Abortion doctor Don Sloan wrote a book entitled Choice: A Doctor’s Experience with the Abortion Dilemma. In it, he says:

So we have these centers where patients are counseled, but don’t make the mistake of thinking it’s a thorough job. The counseling is less than might be desirable at times.

He then explains why the counseling is inadequate:

For someone performing abortions, the volume can be so great it’s overwhelming. I’ve sent out tens and tens of thousands of women, and I know so little about so many of them- most of them. How could I? In a sense, the doctor is only a tradesperson, a technician performing a task, like any other…There are many times- frequently, in fact, and I do to this very day- when I will get a referral to do an abortion on a woman I’ve never seen, will see only for those fleeting minutes of the termination, and then never see again. That scenario isn’t peculiar to me- it goes with the territory.

So much for abortion being between “a woman and her doctor.”

Sloan describes a situation where women are rushed through the abortion procedure, one after another. Women who regret their abortions have described the experience as being on an assembly line, processed through the abortion machinery rapidly with no time to ask questions or think about what they were doing.  Obviously, counseling fell by the wayside.

Dr. Sloan has been unusually honest for an abortionist. In the same book he debunks the argument that abortion is sometimes necessary to save the life of the mother.
