The right to life is the foundation on which all other rights are built. No matter what justice we fight for — whether it’s freedom of speech, the right to vote, equal pay, or clean drinking water — these forms of justice are meaningless without life.
That’s why it isn’t surprising that when artist Serge Belo decided to spread awareness about the lack of clean drinking water throughout the world, he did so by creating the image of a preborn child using water.
As reported by Of Note Magazine, Belo created 66,000 – A Water Mosaic With A Cause by using 66,000 cups of colored rainwater. Each cup is a different shade to mirror the different colors of polluted water. The entire mosaic is 2.32 miles long, the average distance that a woman in Africa and Asia will walk each day to access water. From above, the 66,000 various cups create the image of a preborn child.
Belo said he did this to highlight “the necessity of water, even before birth, for each living person…it is a powerful image that anyone can relate to.”
A powerful image. A human life, yet to be born, and without any rights in much of the world, but needing the same thing we all need to survive — water. Until about 12 weeks of pregnancy, the amniotic fluid surrounding a preborn baby is made up almost entirely of water.
Environmental activists often support abortion because they believe that people are destroying the earth. They believe that without abortion, our planet will suffer, and more people will be at risk for starvation and polluted drinking water. However, when we work to improve the environment and create wider access to clean water, we do so for the future of the human race — including the preborn.
Instead of aborting our future, we should be embracing it, as Belo has done. We should be using power to think of ways to save the planet and other people instead of using power to kill. Clean drinking water can be created with technology. Lives can be saved through advances in medicine. Each step we take to further our society is made by a human who thought of something no one else had thought of before. How many more innovative ideas might have been squashed because we aborted the great minds behind them?
1.8 million children die each year because of a lack of clean water. That’s one child every 20 seconds. Meanwhile, 56 million children die each year because of abortion. That’s more than one child per second.
We need to protect and provide for all of our children, our future, instead of killing them.
