Blind mother ‘sees’ her preborn child through 3D printed ultrasound

Tatiana Guerra

Tatiana Guerra is a 30-year-old mother from Brazil who is pregnant with her second child.  At the age of 17, Guerra lost her sight. A YouTube video titled “Meeting Murillo”  from the Brazilian branch of Huggies shows Tatiana getting an ultrasound at 20 weeks.

At the start of the video, we see Guerra speaking in Portugese about the dreams she has for her child: “I want to show him the ocean…for him to feel the little grains of sand between his toes.”

Then we see Guerra talking to her doctor as he views her baby on the ultrasound screen. “What does his face look like doctor?” she lovingly asks. The doctor tells her, “His nose looks like yours. His two little eyes are closed.”

As Guerra is telling the doctor how she imagines her son’s little chubby hands, a 3D printer is taking her ultrasound image and turning it into a small sculpture.

A beautiful surprise is about to take place that will cause many viewers to tear up. The doctor asks Guerra, “If you could touch him, would that let you know what he’s like?” She says yes. “If you held him, would you feel it?” the doctor asks.

She says yes again and the doctor hands her the ultrasound sculpture wrapped in a white cloth. “That’s your son,” he says. Guerra is completely surprised and overwhelmed with emotion.

The doctor says, “That’s an image of your son. See if he feels the way you think he does.”

Guerra touches her finger over the words in braille and reads aloud, “I am your son.” As she’s laughing with joy she says, “I am very happy to meet Murilo, before he’s born.”

As the video ends, Guerra is still touching the image of her son’s face. The words on the screen say, “Every mom deserves to embrace each moment.”

Guerra got an special opportunity to  hold in her hand an image of the child she carries inside of her. Videos like these give us a heartwarming picture of the love a mother has for her child, even before that child is born. They also remind that even when preborn children aren’t seen, they are still beautiful little human beings worthy of protection. I do pray that every mom like Guerra would embrace the gift of life.
