Canadian Education Official: Catholics Can No Longer Teach that Abortion Is Wrong

Laurel Broten is a practicing Catholic who sends her children to Catholic schools. She’s also the education minister of Ontario, Canada. And in a shocking display of infringement of religious freedom, she’s just decreed that Catholic schools can no longer teach that abortion is wrong.

“Taking away a woman’s right to choose could arguably be considered one of the most misogynistic actions that one could take,” Laurel Broten said during a press conference.

“Bill 13,” she asserted, “is about tackling misogyny.”

Schools are also being forced to establish gay-straight alliances in addition to preaching that abortion is acceptable.

This, quite frankly, is one of the most egregious and outrageous assaults on religious freedom I’ve ever heard of. The Catholic Church is ardently against abortion, and defends life in all its capacities. Now, Catholic schools are being forced to choose: go against their religion and principles, or break the law.

And while fighting against bullying and preaching acceptance are important, defending those who have no voice is even more important. Broten claims to respect Catholic education, but this is clearly a blatant attack on the Church and her teachings. The Catechism of the Catholic Church mandates the protection of human life, and Broten is forcing Catholic schools to turn their back on that.

As for misogyny in pro-life beliefs, millions of girls have been aborted over the years. Babies being aborted simply for being female is by no means rare. But where is Broten’s outrage over that?

What is truly frightening and offensive about this is that it isn’t enough for abortion merely to be legal — pro-aborts like Broten clearly want to make it illegal for those who seek to defend life to even have the right to speak out and practice their beliefs! The end goal is not just to keep abortion legal. It’s to silence the voices of pro-lifers.

This attack on religious freedom cannot stand.

Really? Broten is a practicing Catholic, yet she’s actively promoting abortion? Maybe she should practice a little harder. I don’t think she’s got Catholicism down just yet…

Broten needs desperately to get Canon 915 thrown at her for causing scandal in the Church! Praying that her Bishop excommunicates him QUICKLY!

and they call themsevles pro-choice? it’s okay to choose to have your child murdered but not okay to choose to teach what you believe?

    • http://www.facebook.com/beverly.harlton Beverly Harlton

Well, teaching what you believe is indoctrination, unless, of course, you’re teaching secularism or giving kids a wishy-washy view of God. That’s apparently not indoctrination at all…

The Pope will soon change the position of the Church on abortion. Abortion actually saves life and pro life actions cause death. Scientific facts show that pro lifers are actually murdering born children, adults and babies along with wanted fetuses in an effort to force birth.
Pro lifers have a choice, they may choose to save a born baby or let it die and instead try to force the birth of a fetus that they cannot prove is human or alive. http://www.naturalabortionlaws.com http://www.facebook.com/naturalabortionlaw

Your comment is shockingly, utterly insane. Get help my friend.

      • http://www.facebook.com/russell.c.crawford Russell C. Crawford

You have a choice Seth Murray, you may choose to save a born baby, or you may let it die and attempt to save a fetus that you cannot prove is alive. Which do you choose to save.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Seth-Murray/676313267 Seth Murray

          1. To claim that a fetus is not alive demonstrates complete ignorance of biology; any argument with that as an element or premise cannot be taken seriously and does not merit further comment.

          2. No one is presented with the choice of saving this person or that fetus; this is a straw man proposition/argument. You might fool a few others with this silliness, but I suspect that the real person you are fooling is yourself.

Yes, people die (both before and after they are born). We all do and will. But there is a substantial difference allowing a natural death and deliberately bringing it about. You don’t seem to be able to tell the difference. And that is the problem.

your beliefs, your website and you entire outlook are truly demented, and undeserving of consideration by sane human beings..I am always stunned when people have pretensions to intelligence and spew out your sort of mindless drivel. have a good life and find a shrink, FAST.

      • http://www.facebook.com/russell.c.crawford Russell C. Crawford

Wolff Bachner, you have a choice, you may save born life or you may let it die and attempt to save unborn life. Which do you choose to save. There are 1.8 born humans dying each second, any time you spend attempting to make an excuse to save a fetus is a second you spend killing born life. If you spend 100 seconds responding to this post, you will have caused the death of 180 born babies, children and adults. Shall I start building baby caskets?

Let’s just forward your website to the Pope now, shall we? I’m sure he’ll love it

The Pope has a choice, he may save born babies or let them die in an effort to save dead fetuses. Which will he choose to save? Each second he spends making an excuse to save fetuses, 1.8 babies die.

I went to Catholic school in Canada and we were taught about birth control and abortion as part of our sex ed. In religion class, we were taught what the church’s stance on abortion is but never taught abortion is wrong. Same thing with homosexuality. We were taught what the bible and church says about it, but pretty much encouraged to think for ourselves about it and love everyone and all that. I actually remember this one kid at my school (reminds me a lot of Calvin come to think of it) who tried to start a pro-life group and no one joined. Even the teachers seemed annoyed with him. Also, fyi, Catholic schools in Canada are publicly funded so if the government says they can’t teach abortion is wrong, then tough luck eh?

In Canada, just because you’re religious doesn’t mean that you get special rights. This is exactly what should happen. School’s are meant to educate, not indoctrinate.
