Canadian town refuses to fly pro-life flag, despite flying gay pride flag

Just one week after flying a rainbow flag in recognition of “gay pride celebrations,” Kelowna, British Columbia has refused to fly a pro-life flag. For years, the city has operated under a policy which allows different groups to submit a design for a flag and have it flown on a city flagpole in front of city hall.

For five years, Kelowna has named the last week in September “Protect Human Life Week.” Kelowna Right to Life Society wanted to fly a pro-life flag at city hall in recognition of this celebrated week. Earlier this month, CBC News reported:

Marlon Bartram, executive director of the Kelowna Right to Life Society, said the city hall rejected the flag’s original design, which included the words ‘From conception to natural death’ along the bottom of the flag.

‘That statement apparently violated their policy that the flag cannot advocate a certain point of view, be it political, religious or ethical,’ Bartram said.

The second flag design, which is being considered by city staff, is blue and white, with red stripes and with three silhouettes — a toddler, an adult and an elderly person — and with the word “pro-life” printed in capital letters across the centre.

Now, however, Bartram and the Right to Life Society have received their final answer, and it’s a resounding “no.” For some reason yet to be explained, Kelowna’s city council decided they needed to revise their flag flying policy just in time to refuse Bartram’ request. From CBC News yesterday:

Kelowna city councillors have voted to stop flying any ‘courtesy flags’ in front of city hall after an anti-abortion group applied to fly their pro-life flag. …

[N]ews of the flag-raising sparked public outcry and on Monday night city council decided that no flags would fly at city hall other than the Canadian flag, the B.C. flag and the city’s flag.

It seems that even CBC News – a general news agency – recognizes that the new policy was passed in response to the pro-life group’s request and protests against their request. Of course, the policy will now prevent any group from flying a flag at city hall. As passed, the new policy is “viewpoint neutral” – an important requirement, at least in the United States. However, while Kelowna Right to Life Society was not discriminated against in law, the group has still been discriminated against by the city council’s timing and actions.

Two things are apparent from this disappointing story out of Canada. First, too many political officials appear to be swayed by a desire to remove themselves from controversy instead of being willing to take a stand for what is right, just, and equal. We ought to remember this when we choose whom to vote for come November. Second, pro-lifers need to keep speaking up. Even if we are discriminated against, our actions, petitions, words, prayers, and stances do indeed make a difference. According to the Kelowna Right to Life Society, multiple major news outlets – including the CBC, the Globe, and the Mail – are now talking about the Kelowna Right to Life Society and the Protect Human Life week.

While it’s sometimes discouraging to be the target of discrimination, we ought to take a plan of action away from this story: more Canadian and American citizens should ask their own city councils to proclaim a Protect Human Life week! How ’bout it?

As Oregon residents, my family has vacationed in Canada dozens of times…..
Kelowna will definitely be off our list from now on.

As to be expected this is an ignorant article. What do gays and abortions have to do with each other in Canada? Gay pride is no longer political in Canada as there has been gay equality for nearly a decade now. Flying the pride flag is non-political and a sign of solidarity to the gay community. Flying a pro-life flag certainly is a political statement; also quite incendiary and unnecessary because there is little interest in changing abortion laws in Canada.

Just because there is “gay equality” (to use your words) in Canada doesn’t mean it’s not a controversial issue or something that some Canadian citizens disagree with. I personally know multiple Canadians who would indeed disagree with the Canadian laws on this issue.

In addition, you somewhat contradict yourself by saying that “flying a pro-life flag certainly is a political statement” but also saying that “there is little interest in changing abortion laws in Canada.” Usually, a political issue is one with great interest on both sides and major debate. You seem to claim that doesn’t happen in Canada.

Furthermore, you seem to imply that people with a supposedly minority view who annoy the supposed majority should be denied the same rights that the majority has. That’s unfair, discriminatory, and anti-freedom of speech.

From my perspective there really is no nation-wide debate about abortion and gay rights in Canada. These are issues that have been settled years ago, and the vast majority of people have little interest in re-evaluating such laws. To clarify I consider flying a pro-life flag to be political because it advocates changing current laws and is the voice of a small group of advocates.

I consider flying the gay pride flag to be non-political because it does not advocate changing laws and nearly all people in Canada support gay rights (including many in the conservatives party). It is symbol representing the gain of civil rights for the people. Similar to if they flew a flag to celebrate women’s suffrage.

Finally, in my original statement I never said the pro-life flag shouldn’t be flown, only that it would be incendiary and unnecessary. If your article didn’t drag gay rights into the picture or was about an American city then I really wouldn’t have a problem seeing things from your perspective.

Given the church drives several thousand gay kids to suicide with its subtle poisoning of Amerian society, the pro lifers are really mass murderers

Sure they dont shoot the kids. They just use their words.

Another catholic did the same thing – the result of a millenia of hatred of Jews by the catholic church – 55 million died and the holocaust of gays, Jews, gypsies and others by a racist catholic.

BTW the church talks about saving life – here’s the popes idea of what it means – he in 2009 UNexcommunciated a holocaust denier bishop williamson.

the man should be brought before a reconstituted Nuremberg court
