Knights of Columbus Poll finds majority of Americans favor abortion restrictions

A new poll shows that a majority of Americans favor restrictions on abortion. The Marist Institute for Public Opinion poll commissioned by Knights of Columbus found that 8 in 10 Americans favor stricter abortion controls. This year’s poll found that 83% favor more restriction, up four points from last year.

The polling broke down further to show that of the 83%:

  • 10% want all abortion to be unavailable
  • 12% believe abortions to save a mother’s life should be permitted
  • 34% only want to allow abortions to save a mother’s life or in cases of rape or incest
  • 27% want to restrict abortion to the first three months of pregnancy

Another part of the survey found that 58% Americans believe that abortion is “morally wrong.”

Data from the poll was collected via landline and cell phone from December 4 to 6, 2012. 1,246 adults were surveyed and the poll has a margin of error within +/- 2.8 percentage points.
