This will be a new chapter in our lives. We’ve already been so fortunate for the opportunity to touch people’s lives around the world — Cilla as a doctor and educator, and me through this community and philanthropy. Now we’ll focus on making the world a better place for our child and the next generation.

Zuckerberg opened up to his readers about a personal struggle he and Priscilla have endured. The couple has been trying to have a baby for years and had three miscarriages along the way. Miscarriages are one of the most painful things a couple desiring a family can go through. Mark expressed his feelings over the loss of three of his preborn children.

You feel so hopeful when you learn you’re going to have a child. You start imagining who they’ll become and dreaming of hopes for their future. You start making plans, and then they’re gone. It’s a lonely experience. Most people don’t discuss miscarriages because you worry your problems will distance you or reflect upon you — as if you’re defective or did something to cause this. So you struggle on your own.

Zuckerberg is telling the world about their miscarriages because he believes discussing the issue brings people closer together. He said that in an open and connected world, discussing the struggles we face helps to create understanding, tolerance and bring hope. When the couple began talking to their friends about their miscarriages, they realized how many had similar issues. They learned how frequently miscarriages happen and were encouraged to discover the couples they knew were still able to have healthy children after a miscarriage.

Zuckerberg believes sharing their story will give others hope, just like they felt hopeful after talking to other couples. Since Priscilla is far enough in the pregnancy now, the risk of loss is very low.

For a man who made a thumbs up symbol into something millions use daily on Facebook, the surprise they  got during their ultrasound was extra special. “In our ultrasound, she even gave me a thumbs up “like” with her hand, so I’m already convinced she takes after me,” said Zuckerberg.

The happy couple and millions of fans in the world are now awaiting for the arrival of this loved little girl. Congratulations to the Zuckerberg family!
