Planned Parenthood aborts plans to open a mega-clinic

In what pro-life leaders are calling a “huge victory for life,” Planned Parenthood has settled a lawsuit and quietly put the 17,050-square-foot building it purchased in Auburn Hills, Michigan back on the market for sale.

Pro-lifers are cautiously jubilant. “We prevailed in what was set before us,” said Dr. Monica Miller, director of Citizens for a Pro-Life Society (CPLS), who spearheaded the opposition against Planned Parenthood of Mid and South Michigan (PPMSM). “There will be no abortions out of there but we are watching to see if they are still looking for other places to open a clinic in Oakland County.”

PPMSM announced that they intended to open a “full-service” clinic in Oakland County in April of 2010. In November of the same year, they purchased the prime property on N. Opdyke Road, local to several high schools, colleges, and universities. From that location, they could also target the African-American population in nearby Pontiac.

Upon hearing the news, pro-life activists and citizens in Auburn Hills began with swift and furious opposition, calling the situation a community crisis. Concerted efforts united Christian leaders, churches, and pro-life groups: Citizens for a Pro-life Society, Central Oakland Right to Life, Crossroads Pregnancy Center, Lifespan/RTL, Nurses for Life, Heartfelt Family Services, Real Estate for Life, and pro-life attorneys, who held organizational meetings and used their individual skills to delve into the problem.

The community petitioned and gathered 10,850 signatures and presented them to the Auburn Hills City Council and to Washington, D.C. CPLS organized a steady stream of protest rallies with speakers that drew hundreds to the site.

Residents promised to boycott any local contractors who would agree to develop the empty building. Lastly, but most of all, they called for prayer.

Believing that prayer was something that everyone could do, Miller said, “We need your prayers! Everyone should be praying daily and fervently that this abortion clinic will not open! Pray to stop the killing. Pray for the vulnerable women, the abandoned and lonely unborn child who wants to live. Pray that funds will be cut to Planned Parenthood[.]”

The fruit of all this effort and what appears to have won the day was a legal battle that began after Real Estate for Life founder Dave Theisen discovered a covenant deed restriction limiting the property to office, retail, or restaurant use only. The owners of the property, practicing Hindus, tried to enforce the deed restriction, causing PPMSM to file a lawsuit.

The building remained undeveloped while the judicial process played out. In the courtroom, Judge James Alexander decided that more time was needed before deciding on whether Planned Parenthood could call itself a “medical office” as a type of office under the restriction or whether Defense Attorney James Carey could define what a medical office means. Alexander ultimately ruled in favor of Planned Parenthood, but not until more than a year had passed from the time the land had been purchased.

Planned Parenthood lost hundreds of thousands on the property in the meantime. After 18 months of fighting to develop the empty building into an abortion mega-clinic, Planned Parenthood has settled the lawsuit, agreeing that they will never perform abortions at the site.

Details of the settlement are confidential, and Lori Lamerand, CEO of Mid and South Michigan Planned Parenthood, never admitted that they were in a financial bind, but rather claimed that the organization had decided not to waste money on “frivolous litigation.” Lamerand insists in the Oakland Press that PPMSM is content with the settlement. “Even though the lower court agreed that we had every right to operate a medical office on the site, we’ve decided that we are not going to spend more time and money litigating their baseless claims,” she said. “Instead, we will focus upon providing critical health care services. We have not wavered in our commitment to opening more centers in Oakland County.”

Attorney James Carey said that in the settlement, Planned Parenthood and the hotel owners agreed to amend the restrictive covenant so that no abortion services will be permitted on the property.

This is something you can do in real estate, says attorney and pro-life leader Rebecca Kiessling. “Property owners, you can keep an abortion clinic from opening. Stipulate it in your deed. Add the words, ‘in perpetuity’ and an abortion may never been performed on your property!”

Kiessling is happy with the outcome of the Auburn Hills battle. “It is a great victory! It gives me the chills!” she said. She gives credit to many people coming together and using their “skill sets” – particularly  Theisen for his research and Carey, who offered his work pro bono. “This was OUR community that was being targeted,” he said.

Added Brenda Savage of Birth Choice Pregnancy Center, “Our prayers are answered! … to see this change is a reward that must be recognized for what it is: God is encouraging all of us to keep alive the mission to respect all life from conception to natural death … and to do so peacefully … it is a joy to be associated with so many caring and dedicated individuals.”

Dr. Miller wants to encourage others who may be caught up in a similar battle. “Be encouraged!” she says. “Don’t be defeatist but act! Trust in God, be vigilant and stop them!”

Planned Parenthood will just find another place.

And when they do we will stop them from building there

It won’t stop it, just drive things further underground…

  • Pro-life student

Wow! Praise the Lord! This gives me hope. I will continue to pray for the end of abortion and against any PP clinic that tries to open in Oakland County. I do not want a clinic that kills babies under false pretenses such as “health services” to be in my community.

Another pathetic act by the anti-choice creeps to trample on women’s rights. Shame on you all.

    • Lina Padilla

Killing babies, in the guise of women’s rights, should be stopped!

    • Kristen M

The early feminists never fought for women to kill their babies  in utero. They didn’t see that as a woman’s right.

Medical technology wasn’t advanced enough for it to be a viable option at the time.

Please. Self-termination of pregnancies have existed since humanity discovered that rocks are heavy objects…just cause that’s ugly to hear doesn’t make it any less true.

Right….let them grow up to be old enough to see/hear/REALLY experience child abuse…often repeatedly…for years. We don’t need more Susan Smiths in this world, which is what your ideal opens the door for…from women coerced into motherhood, just a few clicks away from going full crazy?

No one has the right to commit murder

Shame on us for standing up for little children that don’t yet have a voice to defend themselves?

Would you in the womb have wanted someone to fight for you if your mother wanted to abort you?

The only reason you are alive and able to say you are pro-abortion is because your mother chose life.

Shame on all the ungrateful humans.  We are all former fetuses whether we wish to think about it and admit the truth or not.

Killing a human at anytime during the continuum of his or her life ends that life forever, whether it is immediately after the union of egg and sperm, at 6 months in utero, or at age 5, 55, or 95.

Killing is not my right or yours.  Abortion does not free a woman from an unwanted child, it just makes her the mother of a dead baby.  This often haunts her until she can get some emotional and psychological healing.

Many oppose the violence of war, the violence of the death penalty.  What about violence in the womb of our newest, most innocent members of the human race?

Please think before you heatedly insult people.

      Thanks.

“Please think before you heatedly insult people” is only a sentiment you hold towards yourselves when addressed by opposing argument…yet it always seems to be open season on the ones who don’t agree with you.
Your comparison is flawed because the dead unborn don’t have a way to voice their opinion, so you can fit just about anything that suits YOU in their non-existent opinion…for all you know, it could have been “Whew! Dodged a bullet! If my birth mother had chosen to keep me, she would have to work 60 hour weeks just to support me on her own, and still couldn’t afford a babysitter! So she would have had to have left me in the care of abusive relatives and I would have spent my entire formative years scarred with ridicule from my peers & emotional/physical beatings PLUS molestation from “trusted” members of my own family!!” If I had the wherewithal in utero to wrap the cord around my neck, I would have. Bringing a life into the world IS sentencing them to death, ultimately. And is guaranteeing them the experience of pain, isolation, sensory overload, fear, cold…and THAT’S all while they’re still wet with birth goo! Better to never have been…

With regard to the comment by “Guest” who was speaking about women suffragettes and the availability of abortion: Medical technology wasn’t advanced enough for it to be a viable option at the time.

Abortions have been performed in a variety of ways in nearly every culture since ancient times.  In Asia beating the mother’s abdomen, mercury and other methods have been in use for thousands of years.  The Old Testament of the Bible mentions induced abortions by chemicals, “bitter waters” were used to destroy the child and bring on menses (see Numbers).  Places in Europe were using pessaries and potions to induce abortions such as lavender, worm fern, thyme, etc.  Other measures to induce abortions have included iron sulfates and chlorides, hyssop, dittany, opium, madder in beer, and watercress seeds. Probably the herbs most commonly mentioned were tansy and pennyroyal.  Some nations used surgical methods to remove preborn children.

It wasn’t until the mid 1800′s that science clearly proved that a human was created when a sperm and egg united.  Since then, it has been known that a unique person begins life at conception.  Once this was determined, Christian churches began to declare that abortion at anytime was wrong (before then, some churches did not understand how the baby came to be and had no clear declarations or thought that abortion was licit up until quickening).

Our hard working suffragettes like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton could find ways to have abortions.  Many, many herbs and other methods were known to “work.”  However, these women fought for rights of all women, including future women, which would all start out in the womb.  They were pro-life and rightly so.    Also, killing is not medicine, it is killing.  Lumping abortion and abortion inducing drugs (abortifacients) into “women’s rights” and medicine is hypocracy to the highest degree.

If your mother had exercised the “right” to kill her baby in the womb as a medical preventative, you wouldn’t be here, end of story.

    God bless all life.

Well then I certainly wouldn’t care about any of this, would I? I find it bizarre when people bring that up: “your mother chose life!” Yes, and if she hadn’t, it’s not like I would know any better because I wouldn’t really have existed, not as the actual thinking person I am.

And actually since their numbers were way down around the times of the Plague and the various Crusades, the Catholic Church (the only one around that long ago) was even opposed to masturbation, etc. since it wasted the sperm. Seeing prostitutes was a better option than masturbation (and other options)  because at least there was a chance that a new Catholic would be born and increase the Church’s ranks.

And yes, women have been doing their best to end unwanted pregnancies for far longer than the modern medical methods have existed, but like many other aspects of modern medicine, the earlier options weren’t nearly as safe and effective.

Wow, Jennifer for Life, you are so well informed about the history of abortion! Amazing knowledge! I can’t understand how such well informed comments fail to illicit respect  and acknowledgement  but I have seen it happen far too many times when people just like to argue and think they are so intelligent. But they lack empathy and the sense of treating others the way they would like to be treated. “I guess I would never know if I was aborted!” geesh!  Guest, with your obvious hostility to the Catholic Church and ingratitude for your own life, why would anyone take you seriously? Abortion is not safe for the mother and women still die from it today. They also die from the Pill and venereal disease. They also die from suicide after having had a abortion and they suffer a great many psychological effects and physical effects like incontinent cervix quite commonly. If you really cared about women, you would learn your facts.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100004059762081 Lpj Luzania

If YOU really cared about women, you would learn YOUR facts…the catholic church has committed atrocities against women and virtually enabled men to get away with murder, molestation, rape…while finding some sin or another in the FEMALE??? If there’s any hostility to be named, it’s from the catholic church itself…if you were to detail their history without revealing their name, one would think they’re greedy bloodthirsty slavemasters. You pro-natalists (especially the catholics) are so odd in your logic: turning a blind eye to rape, poverty, spousal/familial abuse…but the desire in privately controlling one’s own life through their fertility…THAT’S a a problem?? Priorities like that show not an organization who cares about alleiviating suffering/improving the lives of their followers, but one who cares only about subjugation & control. Side note: one or all of the above problems (poverty, spousal/familial abuse, rape) ALL ORIGINATE FROM the consequences of keeping unwanted/unplanned pregnancies! It’s because of pro-natalists like you, foster homes are overflowing with unwanted kids, the streets are burdened with runaway kids and social workers are so busy, they couldn’t find their own ass with both hands! You’re imposing YOUR will to live on someone who may not even want it. Forcing motherhood on a female who doesn’t want it won’t magically make her a good mother or provider, no matter how many bible studies you too coerce her into going. Adding responsibility to one’s life does not make one MORE responsible! Oh, why bother…it’s like trying to speak reason to “the Flat Earth Society” lol.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100004059762081 Lpj Luzania

Whenever a pro-natal says that to me, I tell them I wish my mother HAD chosen to abort me…and I really do wish I had never been, since I was a child myself. This world is one scary, violent, ugly toxic place & getting more so by the day…I see women who want kids in this world as out of their minds. Pro-natal is NOT pro-life. If pro-natalists were truly pro-life, they’d spend their time instead crusading for the quality of life for those already here…instead of wasting time sticking their heads up other females’ lady business. They think of abortion as DENYING them the “right” to live, when it’s really SPARING them inevitable death and the pain of existing in this world! I can see in the one minute I’ve spent here, that this place is ridiculously biased, there’s really no use in saying anything more in a place like this. I’ve heard every argument in their playbook (I get extra prejudice for being a childfree person), there’s nothing they’ve said that I haven’t heard anyway lol
