Pro-lifers call for immediate closing of hazardous Birmingham abortion clinic

A detailed deficiency report filed on an abortion clinic in Birmingham, Alabama in early March has pro-lifers calling for its immediate closure. On Wednesday, April 11, at 10:30 a.m., CEC For Life will hold a press conference right across the street from the New Woman All Women abortion facility, calling on Alabama for its immediate shutdown.

New Woman All Women abortion clinic, Birmingham, AL

New Woman All Women, located at 1001 17th St. S in Birmingham, Alabama, has been reported to have had “a breach in protocol on January 21, 2012, resulting in two patients being transferred out via ambulance to a local hospital.” The two patients were reported to have “received an unknown excessive amount of the drug Vasopressin[,]” which was “an error” on the part of the registered nurse working at the clinic at the time.

The deficiency report notes that staff were “not properly trained to provide safe quality patient care[,]” nor did the physicians have “documentation they were qualified to perform abortions in their personnel files.” Other failures include false, inaccurate medical records, failure to follow up with patients who as a result experienced lethal complications following an abortion, and failure to inform the local hospital of the patients’ conditions.

Pro-life organizations and leaders in Alabama “[applaud] the Alabama Department of Public Health for requiring the clinic to surrender its license,” but these groups strongly oppose the DPH’s decision to allow this New Women All Women to remain in business for another five weeks prior to its closure.

“Every day this clinic remains open is a day that women could be injured or even killed within a facility that the Department of Public Health has already deemed a danger to the public,” said Sarah Howell, national assistant for CEC For Life. “We request that the State use the full extent of its authority to protect the public now – not later – with the immediate closure of this unsafe clinic.”
