The Ryman twins: fighting the odds

Last night I came across an interview with Mr. and Mrs. Ryman, parents of Byron and Lincoln Ryman, two sweet, relatively healthy identical twin boys. Their story is too precious not to share.

Byron and Lincoln Ryman

Mrs. Ryman’s pregnancy was far from easy. After she finally got pregnant through in vitro fertilization, it was discovered that the babies were not growing at the same rate, due to twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. Byron was getting most of the nutrition and was three times the size of Lincoln.

The Rymans were given two options by the doctors: to continue the pregnancy of both twins, or to abort Lincoln in hopes of saving Byron. According to Mr. Ryman, the latter wasn’t an option: “I don’t think we even thought about it. We just said straightaway, ‘No we didn’t want to do that.’ … It was something I don’t think either of us really considered doing. We just couldn’t do it.”

“We were actually given the option to terminate Lincoln in the beginning, but thank God we didn’t,” Mrs. Ryman said. “I wanted two babies not one.”

Laser surgery was preformed to help correct the problem. The doctor believed that it was a “brave and tough decision to deliver both of the babies. And they made the right decision.”

Byron was born weighing 3 lbs, 6 oz, while his brother Lincoln weighed a light 1 lb 3 oz. Lincoln was only the size of his mother’s hand. The journey has not been without its struggles. Lincoln spent the first five months of his life in the hospital. He was two when he ate his own food instead of being fed through a feeding tube. But Mr. and Mrs. Ryman persevered.

“I honestly thought that we would have two boys with quite a lot of medical issues. But they are actually two fairly normal boys. I’m really proud of them.” Mrs. Ryman.

In a world that has a “convenience” mindset, these two parents fought the odds. The doctors did not think that both boys would live, much less live and be healthy. The Rymans didn’t take the “convenience” option and are blessed because of it.

“We are lucky to have them, like really lucky to have them.”

I’m so glad she chose to let BOTH sons live. How’d you like the topic coming up later in life when Byron found out he was supposed to be a twin. “Mom, I was a twin? Yeah son, but we gave up on your brother and killed him because we THOUGHT he might not live. Sorry.” How upsetting is that?? I’m SOO happy she’s letting both of her children have the RIGHT to live and not choosing such a sad fate.

First of all, great parents!  Both babies are people and both deserve a chance.  But secondly, and I say this with all humor, “Byron Ryman”?  Now that’s an …ahem… interesting name.  God bless them all!

my aunt had the same problem with her twins who are now 17 (i feel so old) and are perfectly healthy. thankfully, their condition was not as severe as this.

  • Alyssahambrick

    Aww that’s awful

    • MoonChild02

Why is that so awful? They let their son live, when many would have killed him. The boys are both very healthy and doing well now, four years later. Watch the video. No one should take the life of a child because medical “experts” think it’s impossible for the child to survive, despite there still being a chance of survival, even if it was small. Lincoln ended up being one in that small percentage that survived to live a normal, happy life.

The problem with this situation is that in vitro fertilization also causes abortions intentionally before the point of this article…when many children are conceived in the petri dish, then discarded or frozen (killed) and then implanting several, hoping that one (or two) will implant…the rest being discarded by the women’s body (aborted).  All these children’s lives are intentionally sacrificed (against their will) for the potential of one new life.  I don’t think this article supports life the way it is hoping to.  I am happy they didn’t abort them all…but some of the brothers and sisters of these two lost their lives in the process of these ones having a chance at life.  The means do not justify the ends…though I guess the ends could have been one life worse…

I’ve read about doctors who are willing to create two or three embryos and implant all of them, so I wouldn’t necessarily assume that Byron and Ryman’s parents allowed any of their embryonic children to die. Maybe they did and maybe they didn’t.

According to the video, they only implanted 1 egg and got identical twins.
