Trump: Republican Party should weaken platform on abortion to include more exceptions

Following a win in New York’s primary, Donald Trump took to NBC’s Today on Thursday morning to express his opinions on abortion, an issue which he has been unpredictable on at times. Specifically, Trump argued that the official GOP platform should be changed to allow for abortion in cases of rape, incest, and life of the mother.

Host Savannah Guthrie brought up the issue, noting that the Republican Party platform “makes no exceptions for rape, for incest, for the life of the mother,” then asking Trump, “Would you want to change the Republican platform to include the (abortion) exceptions that you have?”

“Yes, I would. Yes, I would. Absolutely,” replied Trump. “For the three exceptions, I would.”

The GOP platform currently states, “We assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed.”

According to CNN, Trump and John Kasich are the two remaining GOP presidential candidates to support abortion exceptions for rape, incest, and life of the mother. Ted Cruz has stated that he opposes exceptions for any reason other than to save the life of the mother.
