45-year-old James George pleaded guilty last week in Oxfordshire, England, to buying a poisonous or noxious pill to cause a miscarriage. He was sentenced to two years in jail.
In August 2014, George’s girlfriend became pregnant. She made it clear that she was choosing to keep the baby. However, George apparently did not want a child, and the Oxfordshire Guardian reports that he ordered abortion pills online three times.
“George put the victim under a lot of pressure to have a termination,” said Detective Constable Jane Tregurtha, of the domestic abuse unit. “He went to great lengths, researching abortion websites, phoning clinics, and took the victim to her GP to discuss a termination.”
In addition to jail time, a restraining order was issued against George. The pregnancy resulted in a miscarriage in October 2014.
Unfortunately, men using abortion (or pressuring women to use abortion) as an escape from parenthood is not as uncommon as we may think.
Elliot Institute Director David Reardon explains that in many cases, “police and witnesses reported that acts of violence and murder took place after the woman refused to abort or because the attacker didn’t want the pregnancy.”
Even if a woman isn’t physically threatened, she often faces intense pressure, abandonment, lack of support, or emotional blackmail if she doesn’t abort. While abortion is often described as a ‘choice,’ women who’ve been there tell a very different story.
